Spain – “The green hydrogen revolution”: Córdoba prepares to lead the sustainable industry

The Provincial Council of Córdoba hosted today the conference ‘The Green Hydrogen Revolution’, with which it intends to promote the industry linked to this clean energy as an engine for development, so that “very important expectations are opened up to reindustrialize and expand the productive fabric of the province.”

This is how the president of the provincial institution, Salvador Fuentes, expressed himself at the inauguration of this meeting where he highlighted that “although it does not directly affect us, there are many opportunities that open up for the province of Córdoba, in the same way that it is already a reality in Huelva and in Cádiz.”

Fuentes, who was accompanied by the territorial delegate for Economy, Finance and European Funds of the Andalusian Regional Government, Agustín López, and by the president of the Andalusian Hydrogen Cluster, Francisco Montalbán, argued that “the province of Córdoba can contribute a great deal to this industrial opportunity to take advantage of the revolution that is taking place throughout Europe regarding green hydrogen.”

Fuentes added:

It is a development process that has its focus on Andalusia, in line with the strategy of the Andalusian Regional Government, which has already laid out the roadmap for green hydrogen in Andalusia by positioning this energy vector as a strategic focus in Europe and in southern Europe,

Among the contributions that the province can make, Fuentes emphasized that “we can be a technological actor and industrial supplier that allows us to increase its capacity to generate qualified employment, since we can supply equipment and technology components for that green hydrogen, for which we need to promote the local industry linked to engineering.”

The head of the Provincial Council highlighted this potential through the experience implemented in the municipality of Dos Torres “through a collaborative process between dual vocational training and an exporting company, which demonstrates that all engineering mechanisms can be used to supply equipment to this new green hydrogen industry and the skilled employment generated through this training.”

For Fuentes, qualified vocational training and the industrial potential of the province are the basis “for the new business fabric that can be established in the province of Córdoba, together with sustainable mobility, that is, the capacity that entrepreneurs in the transport sector can have to mobilize this energy.”

Finally, he highlighted the interest of the business sector present at the conference, “who are here because they want to take advantage of this opportunity, and their support is very important to us for the industrialization of the province of Córdoba. That is why these conferences are organized, because companies need information to manage the opportunities and new capabilities that can be developed in our region.”

For his part, López highlighted the aid planned by the Andalusian Regional Government for the green hydrogen value chain, to which they will allocate “51 million euros within the aid program for this sector with the aim of encouraging industry to introduce new manufacturing processes linked to green hydrogen, energy production, replacement of machinery and components, that is, not only for final production, but also for the entire value chain process.”

In these lines, López pointed out that “in the province of Córdoba they can be applied throughout the metalworking sector, in industrial refrigeration located in the Lucena area and also in the logistics area, since green hydrogen can be very important for the truck fleet.”

Finally, Montalbán emphasized that,

Córdoba holds a great strategic position within the Andalusian community and Spain.

”Andalusia has a tremendous opportunity due to its size, renewable energy resources, ports, and logistics, as is the case in the city of Córdoba, which we must also promote with green hydrogen. We must seize this opportunity because it represents a future opportunity for Spain, for Andalusia, and for Europe.”

The conference, which took place in the Assembly Hall of the Palacio de la Merced, included presentations on the opportunities of green hydrogen for industry and transport, and on the keys to taking advantage of public incentives, concluding with a round table discussion analyzing the decarbonization of land mobility.
