Hydrogen, Green Networks and Plants: Hera’s Leap Forward

(Alliance News) – Sustainability, circularity, and value for local communities are the pillars of Hera’s 2025-2029 industrial plan, which foresees over EUR5.5 billion in investments, a 40% increase compared to the previous five-year period.

As reported by Corriere della Sera on Monday, the goal is to strengthen infrastructure resilience, support the energy transition, and generate widespread benefits for society.

The plan will bring EBITDA to EUR1.76 billion and net profit for shareholders to EUR519 million, with an average annual growth of 6%, while the economic value distributed to stakeholders will rise to EUR11.5 billion. Dividends will increase by 27%.

Hera aims to reduce its own emissions by 35% by 2029 and achieve Net Zero by 2050, focusing especially on decarbonizing its customers, who account for 90% of total emissions. With 4.5 million customers, the group is investing in energy efficiency, heat pumps, and self-production from renewable sources.

On the renewables front, over 370 MW of photovoltaic capacity will be installed by 2029, with a focus on solutions that do not consume land. The development of green hydrogen also continues, with two Hydrogen Valleys in Trieste and Modena and the adaptation of gas networks.

The main share of investments – 57% – is allocated to electricity, water, gas, and district heating networks, with interventions on climate resilience, digitalization, and innovation. In the water cycle, Hera will increase the reuse of treated water and reduce losses, while new plants and infrastructure upgrades are planned, particularly in Bologna and Trieste.

Finally, district heating networks will expand, with an estimated reduction of 65,000 tonnes of CO2 per year by 2029.
