Hysolar certified for production and distribution of green hydrogen
As a leader in green hydrogen, Hysolar has a reputation to uphold. This will be confirmed once again by the end of 2025: Hysolar is now officially certified for the production and distribution of sustainable hydrogen according to the European Renewable Energy Directive, or green hydrogen. This green hydrogen enables zero emissions: no CO2, nitrogen, or particulate matter emissions throughout the entire chain, from production to use.
The colors of hydrogen
Hydrogen itself is a colorless gas. However, in practice, we speak of different shades of color:
- Gray: Produced from natural gas or other fossil fuels
- Blue: same, but then the released CO2 has been captured
- White: extracted from natural sources deep underground
- Green : produced by splitting pure water using green energy
Since its founding in 2019, Hysolar/Greenpoint has been committed to the production and supply of green hydrogen. We have gradually installed the necessary facilities in Nieuwegein: our hydrogen filling station in 2021 ( official opening of the first public hydrogen filling station in the province of Utrecht: Hysolar/Greenpoint in Nieuwegein ) and then production in 2024 ( King Willem-Alexander opens Hysolar’s green hydrogen production station ).
EU regulations
When can hydrogen officially be labeled ‘green’? The European Renewable Energy Directive provides the framework for this. It describes in detail when hydrogen can be classified as RFNBO (Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin). For example, very specific rules have been established regarding the location and time at which the green electricity required for hydrogen production was generated. This is one of the components of a comprehensive certification process:
Project leader Dik Raadgever, says:
There’s a lot involved,
“In addition to a detailed electricity contract, requirements have been imposed on the measuring instruments in our installation, on the structure of our organization, and on the software we developed for monitoring and reporting all the data.”
Hysolar project team of specialists
In the spring of 2025, Hysolar/Greenpoint assembled an internal project team of specialists to prepare for certification. Because the regulations are still so new, the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO.nl ) provided an external advisor for support.
Joan van Kessel, co-shareholder of Hysolar/Greenpoint, says:
That definitely helped. And we were also able to make good use of our own experience with certifying green fuels,
