TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Miaoli County Government on Monday announced that it will use 1.9 hectares of county land in Tongluo Township for a green hydrogen demonstration park.
CNA reported that the county is working with Fortune Electric to meet Taiwan’s 2050 net-zero goal. The county’s economic development department said the park will combine research, industry demonstrations, and education, making the county an early testbed for hydrogen energy.
Fortune Electric said the company plans to invest more than NT$3.27 billion (US$103 million) in three stages. The company said it will use solar power to split water and produce green hydrogen, aiming to supply cleaner fuel at a lower cost.
Fortune Electric Company Limited CEO Hsu Yi-sheng (許逸晟) noted that annual green hydrogen output is expected to reach at least 280,000 tonnes. Hsu said the county could expect more than NT$500 million (US$16 million) in revenue and NT$10 billion in total economic value.
Miaoli County Magistrate Chung Tung-chin (鍾東錦) said the county studied hydrogen projects in Japan and South Korea to prepare for the plan. Chung said the project is not for mass production but to conduct pilot tests that build skills and industry confidence.
“Water resources and power supplies are key for industry growth,” the magistrate said. Chung said more power generation, a planned reservoir, and future hydrogen energy could meet the artificial intelligence industry demand and help draw high-tech investment.
Green hydrogen is hydrogen made using renewable energy, such as solar power, instead of fossil fuels. It produces virtually no carbon emissions during production and is seen as a cleaner fuel option.
