In light of the Egyptian Commercial Service’s efforts to promote Egyptian investment opportunities abroad and support national initiatives aimed at attracting investments in green hydrogen projects, the Egyptian Commercial Service Office in Montreal, headed by Commercial Counselor Sherif Erfan, in cooperation with the Investment Promotion Department of the Egyptian Commercial Service, organized a virtual meeting between the General Authority for the Suez Canal Economic Zone and Mr. David Billedeau, President of the Canadian Hydrogen Association, to discuss ways to enhance cooperation in the green hydrogen sector.
The meeting was attended by Minister Plenipotentiary Mostafa Sheikoun, Vice President of the Authority for Investment Promotion, and Dr. Mohamed Abu El-Dahab, Director of the Green Economy Department at the Authority.
The President of the Canadian Hydrogen Association reviewed the Association’s role as a national business organization at the federal level, representing more than 200 leading companies operating in the hydrogen sector in Canada.
He emphasized the Association’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with international partners to accelerate the implementation of clean hydrogen solutions and support the transition to a low-carbon economy.
Dr. Mohamed Abu El-Dahab presented an overview of existing projects within the Suez Canal Economic Zone in the fields of green hydrogen and ammonia production.
He highlighted the investment incentives and advantages offered by the state, and reviewed the memoranda of understanding signed with international companies.
The President of the Canadian Hydrogen Association extended an invitation to the Suez Canal Authority to participate in a comprehensive meeting with member companies of the association next March to explore cooperation opportunities.
He also invited the Authority to participate in the Canadian Hydrogen Conference scheduled to be held in Edmonton in April 2026, which will be attended by leading global companies.
Furthermore, it was agreed to arrange a visit by a delegation of member companies to Egypt next year, and to prepare for the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Canadian Hydrogen Association and the Suez Canal Authority to enhance institutional cooperation, exchange expertise, and support the attraction of Canadian investments in the green hydrogen sector.
The Minister Plenipotentiary, Dr. Abdel Aziz El-Sherif, First Undersecretary of the Ministry and Head of the Egyptian Commercial Service (ECS), stated that this meeting is part of the ECS’s active efforts to promote investment opportunities available in the Suez Canal Economic Zone and to support the state’s plan to make Egypt a regional and global hub for the production and export of green hydrogen.
He explained that there are ample opportunities for Canadian companies to invest in this vital sector, particularly in the production of low-cost green hydrogen for export to Europe and Asia.
He added that the Egyptian Commercial Service Office in Montreal is currently coordinating the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Canadian Hydrogen Association and the General Authority for the Suez Canal Economic Zone.
This will contribute to attracting Canadian companies with expertise in managing the entire hydrogen value chain, from production and storage to transportation and distribution, in line with Egypt’s national green hydrogen strategy.
Al-Sharif also noted that the number of Canadian companies or companies with Canadian participation operating in the Egyptian market reached approximately 938 as of February 2025, with total investments amounting to around US$1.7 billion, of which approximately US$314 million is Canadian.
These companies operate in various sectors, including oil and gas, petrochemicals, mining, telecommunications, tourism, and some services and education.
