India is working to become the world’s lowest-cost producer of green hydrogen by sharply reducing production costs from ₹401.6 per kg to ₹89.24 per kg by 2030. Former NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant shared this vision at the National Green Economy Conclave, organised by the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW).
Transforming Key Sectors Through Affordable Green Hydrogen
Kant highlighted that reaching the Rs 89.24 per kg benchmark would transform sectors such as:
*Steel
*Fertilisers
*Mobility
*Heavy transport
He emphasised that achieving this price point would also position India as a global leader in green energy.
Policies and Renewable Growth Driving the Shift
According to Kant, three major developments are enabling this ambitious target:
*The National Green Hydrogen Mission
*Rapid expansion of solar energy capacity
*Falling renewable energy tariffs
Kant stressed that green hydrogen will play a central role in India’s long-term clean manufacturing strategy, while creating new opportunities for startups in recycling, new materials, and circular economy solutions. As reported by ibef.org, India’s push toward low-cost green hydrogen marks a major step in its journey toward clean energy leadership, sustainable growth, and a resilient green economy.
