The federal government and Bavaria are funding the BMW AG IPCEI hydrogen project
Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder, the Minister-President of the Free State of Bavaria Dr. Markus Söder and the Bavarian State Minister for Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy Hubert Aiwanger today presented the funding certificate for the HyPowerDrive project to Dr. Joachim Post, Board Member for Development at BMW AG , in Berlin.
The Federal Ministry of Transport (BMV) and the Bavarian State Ministry for Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy (StMWi) are supporting BMW AG with a total of approximately €273 million within the framework of the Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI) Hydrogen. The Federal Government is contributing approximately €191 million, and the Free State of Bavaria approximately €82 million. The project aims to develop and industrialize an innovative fuel cell electric powertrain for passenger cars that can be integrated into existing vehicle architectures.

The funding approval from the Federal Ministry of Transport confirms our strategy and underscores the commitment of the German Federal Government and the Bavarian State Government to promoting future-proof and marketable innovations.
The HyPowerDrive project was selected in 2021 as part of the European IPCE II Important Project of Common European Interest Hydrogen. Based on an early start date, BMW began implementation in early 2023. Since then, significant technical progress has been made. State aid approval from the European Commission was granted on May 28, 2024. The fuel cell passenger cars are scheduled to be launched on the market from 2028.
The project is one of three IPCE II Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCII) projects funded by the German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure ( BMVI ) in the field of hydrogen mobility. In addition to HyPowerDrive , the Pegasus project by Daimler Truck AG (fuel cell trucks for long-haul transport) and NextGen HD Stack by EKPO Fuel Cell Technologies (a new generation of high-performance fuel cell modules) are also supported.
