Plug Power Ships First Electrolyzer for Galp’s 100MW Green Hydrogen Project

Plug Power Inc. (NASDAQ: PLUG) has delivered its first 10MW GenEco™ electrolyzer array to Galp (OTCMKTS: GLPEY) for installation at the Sines Refinery in Portugal, kicking off a 100MW green hydrogen project that is among the largest underway in Europe.

The shipment represents the first of 10 electrolyzer units scheduled for deployment by early 2026, with full commissioning expected in the first half of next year. Once operational, the facility will produce up to 15,000 tons of renewable hydrogen annually — replacing 20% of the refinery’s grey hydrogen demand and cutting around 110,000 tons of CO? emissions per year.

The $650 million project, announced in 2023, combines green hydrogen electrolysis with renewable fuels production (HVO/SAF), making it a flagship initiative for both Galp and Portugal’s decarbonization strategy. The Sines project highlights the refining sector’s push to reduce reliance on fossil-based hydrogen, which today accounts for roughly half of total industrial hydrogen demand.

For Plug Power, the deal represents its largest global electrolyzer deployment to date and underscores its push into Europe, one of its key strategic markets. The company is also advancing multi-gigawatt projects in Spain and the UK while building out a $2 billion pipeline worldwide. Its GenEco electrolyzers, supported by a global supply chain and modular design, are positioned to scale quickly as clean hydrogen demand accelerates.

Galp has committed to transforming its Sines refinery into a low-carbon hub, with this project serving as a first step toward decarbonizing hard-to-electrify industries. “With our first 100 MW, we will have started the decarbonisation of our Sines refinery. It’s a decisive first step for Galp, but also for the industry,” said Ronald Doesburg, Galp’s EVP of Industrial.

Plug CEO Andy Marsh emphasized that the collaboration demonstrates hydrogen’s readiness for industrial-scale deployment: “This system will be a model for what’s possible across Europe’s refining sector and the broader energy industry.”

The move follows Plug’s acquisition of Frames Group, strengthening its expertise in process systems for oil and gas customers. With over 72,000 fuel cell systems deployed globally and 275 fueling stations, Plug is positioning itself as a leader in delivering integrated hydrogen solutions for industry, transport, and power.
