Ontario Pioneers Green Film Production with Grid Power and Hydrogen Generators
Ontario is aggressively decarbonizing its lucrative film and television industry. The province is replacing diesel generators with clean electrical power and hydrogen technology. This major initiative aims to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of Hollywood productions filming locally.
According to Ontario Film Commissioner Justin Cutler, the push is part of a broader cultural shift. The goal is to make sustainable practices standard for all productions, from small independents to major studio blockbusters.
Mapping a Clean Energy Grid for Film Sets
A key project involves identifying electrical grid tie-in points across the province. Ontario Creates has mapped over 90 specific locations where productions can plug directly into the local power grid. This allows them to shut down diesel generators entirely.
Location managers can access this map through an online library. They then coordinate with property owners to meter and pay for the electricity used. This system offers substantial cost savings for producers while cutting emissions.
Hydrogen Generators and Renewable Diesel Enter the Scene
The innovation extends beyond simple grid power. Canadian company Hone has built the country’s first hydrogen power generator for film sets. This technology offers a true zero-emission alternative to traditional diesel units.
Additionally, the industry is piloting renewable diesel made from collected food waste. This synthetic fuel can power generators and production transport vehicles. Adopting these new tools requires training crews to ensure a smooth transition on set.
