Tasmania has taken a major step toward zero-emission transport, with new hydrogen-powered buses now operating in Hobart as part of the state government’s Hydrogen Electric Bus (HEB) trial. The project uses green hydrogen produced locally and refueled through H2H Energy’s H2CORE system.

The system, housed in a 40ft shipping container, can dispense hydrogen at 35 or 70 MPa, drawing supply from either a tube trailer or an electrolyser. This flexibility reduces infrastructure barriers for operators and was a key reason it was selected for the trial.

Currently supporting three busy buses in Hobart, the refueller is helping demonstrate hydrogen’s role in Australia’s transport future. The trial will also compare the performance of fuel cell electric buses (FCEVs) with battery electric buses (BEVs) in local conditions, providing critical data to guide future investment decisions.

Cranston Polson, CEO and Founder of H2H Energy, highlighted the milestone, said:

Tasmania’s unique combination of hydro and wind resources gives us the ability to produce some of the cleanest hydrogen in the world, and this trial shows how we can put it to work right here in our own communities.

The initiative comes as governments across Australia phase out diesel bus fleets in favor of low- and zero-emission alternatives, with Tasmania well placed to lead thanks to its renewable energy resources.
