SK Gas announced on the 22nd that it held a forum with POSCO Holdings at POSCO Center in Gangnam-gu, Seoul on the 21st under the theme of “Building a Domestic Ecosystem of Sustainable Economic Turquoise Hydrogen.”
The forum was attended by major industry-academic organizations related to hydrogen projects, including the two companies, PwC, the Korea Institute of Energy Economics, Chungbuk Province, and Jeju National University, to discuss the necessity of blue-green hydrogen in the domestic hydrogen ecosystem and ways to expand its base.
Blue-green hydrogen is produced by decomposing natural gas at high temperatures to separate hydrogen and solid carbon. It is attracting attention as hydrogen with both economic and practicality because it does not generate carbon dioxide during the production process and can compensate for regional limitations on domestic production of green hydrogen and blue hydrogen.
Participants pointed out the possibility of commercialization of cyan hydrogen and the need to improve the system, and agreed that a private consultative body should be established to create an ecosystem.
SK Gas will fulfill its responsibility as a comprehensive energy company that contributes to achieving net zero (carbon neutrality) by connecting the stable business capabilities of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the hydrogen business, said Kim Chul-jin, vice president of SK Gas.
“We will accelerate the transition to a hydrogen-based eco-friendly steel production system by developing blue-green hydrogen production technology linked to the steel process, and take the lead in procuring economical hydrogen and creating a blue-green hydrogen ecosystem,” said Kim Ki-soo, Chief Technology Officer of POSCO Holdings.
