The Uttar Pradesh government’s commitment towards green and clean energy got a new dimension on Sunday.
Encouraged by the Green Hydrogen Policy 2024, the state’s first green hydrogen plant has been set up by Torrent Group in Gorakhpur. This plant was inaugurated by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath here on Sunday.

Torrent Group, which took the initiative to supply CNG for vehicles and piped natural gas for homes in Gorakhpur, has set up a green hydrogen plant, contributing to clean energy.
According to Jinal Mehta, director of Torrent Group, this plant — jointly developed by Torrent Gas and Torrent Power — has a production capacity of 72 tonnes per annum.
He said that this green hydrogen plant, established with the inspiration of PM Modi and encouragement from the Yogi government, is the first for this state and the second in the entire country so far. It is also a one-way pilot project.
Under this project, two percent green hydrogen will be mixed with natural gas in the city gas distribution network. With the inauguration of the plant, green hydrogen has become a part of the life of the common man, as it will reach directly to kitchens and vehicles.
Green hydrogen will be produced by electrolysis from 2 MW of renewable energy at the Gorakhpur plant. Blending green hydrogen with natural gas will help reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels and move towards a clean, sustainable energy future.
According to Jinal Mehta, green hydrogen is produced by the electrolysis of water using renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, or hydropower. Mixing it with natural gas reduces the carbon footprint, uses the already established natural gas infrastructure, and helps increase the initial demand for hydrogen.
It is worth noting that the UP government has also formulated a specific policy to increase the production of green hydrogen. Under this policy, the state aims to produce one million metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2028.
