The Government of Odisha, along with key central ministries and major green hydrogen developers, gathered recently to assess the progress of green hydrogen projects in the state. The meeting aimed to accelerate the transition toward clean energy, focusing on production infrastructure, mobility solutions, and investment planning.
Major Projects Take Shape
First, several developers shared updates on their ongoing initiatives. Sembcorp, for example, is working on a green hydrogen plant with an annual production capacity of 720,000 MT. The company has already signed two Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with Odisha’s Industrial Promotion and Investment Corporation (IPICOL) and Industrial Development Corporation (IDCO).
At the same time, NTPC has signed a tripartite MoU with GRIDCO and CRUT to implement green hydrogen-based public transport in Bhubaneswar. This ambitious plan includes a hydrogen fuelling station and hydrogen-powered buses.
Investment in Green Ammonia
In addition, Hygenco recently broke ground on a massive green ammonia plant in Gopalpur. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi led the ceremony, underlining the state’s commitment to renewable energy leadership. The plant is expected to reach a production capacity of 1.1 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), with the first phase scheduled for completion by 2028.
Strategic Partnerships and Financing
As per Indian Chemical News, Odisha is emerging as a central hub for green hydrogen innovation. Union Minister Pralhad Joshi emphasized the state’s vast renewable energy potential—more than 140 GW in solar capacity alone. He also reaffirmed the central government’s support for green hydrogen as a strategic priority.
Furthermore, REC has already committed over ₹40,000 crore to fund two green hydrogen and ammonia plants in Gopalpur. These projects, developed by Acme and Avaada, will significantly boost the state’s clean energy portfolio.
Coordinated Action for a Clean Future
Moving forward, the stakeholders agreed to collaborate more closely on research and development, finalize power purchase agreements, and streamline regulatory approvals. They also plan to develop essential pipeline and logistics infrastructure to support hydrogen distribution.
Odisha Aims to Lead India’s Green Hydrogen Mission
In conclusion, this multi-stakeholder meeting marked a crucial step toward establishing Odisha as a national leader in green hydrogen. With strong government backing, public-private partnerships, and ambitious targets, the state is well-positioned to drive India’s clean energy revolution.
