Proton Motor finalises follow-up fuel cell order | Technology

Proton Motor Power Systems has completed a follow up order with DB Bahnbau Gruppe for the delivery of hydrogen fuel cell systems.

The Deutsche Bahn AG subsidiary will use the fuel cell emergency power system under the customer’s brand name EnerRail H024, boasting a power output of 24kW. After five years of real-world testing and validation by the customer, the order has now been completed.

The solution includes a plug and play HyCabinet S24 fuel cell system – made out of three HyModule® S8 units – a DC/AC converter for 400 VAC output voltage and a gas storage unit with 48 hours’ worth of back-up time.

The system was delivered and installed at a railway centre in the greater Berlin region in April, before it passed the site acceptance test last month (May).

The order was first made last year (2023), after the German rail operator announced plans to use the solution as an application fuel cell substitute power supply in an emergency for rail infrastructure.

Proton Motor’s CEO, Dr. Faiz Nahab, claimed the follow-up order is “further evidence of the company’s progress in commercialising its proprietary hydrogen fuel cell technologies and reaffirms Proton Motor’s leadership in the sector.”

Nahab added, “We look forward to continuing to work further with DB Bahnbau Gruppe to provide them with zero emission hydrogen fuel cell solutions as Deutsche Bahn look to phase out diesel generators by 2026.”
