The economy ministry on Monday 26 May announced the results of its very first call for projects for the production of renewable hydrogen. Launched at the end of October 2024 with a budget of €110m, the programme aims to support local solutions to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
The two projects that have been selected are:
– LuxHyVal, led by Enovos, which provides for 5MW of electrolysis capacity.
– Echo-Wave, developed by Energiwiss Kielen, with a capacity of 2.5MW.
The two initiatives together should produce around 500 tonnes of green hydrogen per year. Public support will amount to up to €47m, divided between investment and operating aid, with a ceiling of €30m per project.
The minister for the economy, SMEs, energy and tourism (DP), welcomed this progress. “The projects selected under this call for projects will enable the fossil hydrogen currently used in Luxembourg to be almost completely replaced. These innovative initiatives meet the climate challenges and will contribute to the development of professional expertise that is essential for decarbonisation.”
Promoted by Enovos and co-financed by the Horizon Europe programme, LuxHyVal goes beyond a simple industrial project. Its ambition is to make Luxembourg a European showcase for renewable hydrogen, by deploying the production, storage, distribution and use of this hydrogen throughout the country. The project plans to produce 650 tonnes of green hydrogen a year, 69% of which will be used in mobility (buses, light industrial vehicles) and 31% in industry (glassmaking, metallurgy). It brings together a consortium of 17 partners from seven countries covering the entire value chain, from engineering to operation, energy, transport and research. These partners include include Encevo, LuxEnergie, R2M Solution, GPSS, Paul Wurth, Sales-Lentz, Tice, Luxmobility, the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (List) and universities in several countries.
