Philadelphia Eagles has installed a hydrogen refuelling station at its stadium capable of producing and refuelling on site.
PDC Machines delivered its hydrogen refuelling unit to the home of the National Football League (NFL) team, Lincoln Financial Field.
The machine is expected to eventually provide 100% renewable energy for stadium operations, fuelling fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) and material handling equipment.
Kareem Afzal, Executive Chairman at PDC Machines, said, “This is truly the first that I’ve seen anywhere in the world, a stadium that’s producing hydrogen on site and fuelling vehicles on site.”
Pennsylvania Governor, Josh Shapiro, claimed the partnership between the two organisations will take the 67,000-capacity stadium “to the next level.”
“[The] hydrogen can be used to power stadium operations [and] refuel hydrogen-powered vehicles. We need to capitalise on renewable energy, this is the future and we’re poised in Pennsylvania to be the leader.”
The NFL outfit and PDC first announced plans to bring hydrogen to the Lincoln Financial Field stadium in 2020, agreeing to use a SimpleFuel hydrogen refuelling unit.

The SimpleFuel solution is designed to take only the inputs of water and electricity to produce clean hydrogen fuel.
Through Philadelphia Eagles’ Go Green programme, it has created a micro-grid of 10,456 solar panels to help generate more than 24 million kilowatt hours and make its stadium one of the greenest major sports facilities in the world.
