Green hydrogen, touted by advocates including mining billionaire Andrew Forrest as the best way to decarbonise many industries, still accounts for less than 1 per cent of total hydrogen production and has become more expensive compared with the fossil fuel version.
The International Energy Agency has slashed its estimate of potential low-emissions hydrogen output in 2030 by a quarter to 37 million tonnes a year, in a report that casts further doubt on ambitions to expand the clean fuel to help meet global climate targets.
